wtmoore -- actually, as Dr Sowell pointed out, many companies pay more than union wages. A free market in labor will ensure that talented people get paid what they are worth. Those with less talent will be paid less, but will have an incentive to become more productive. Remember that Henry Ford started paying workers more than the prevailing wage and cut hours worked long before unions were in vogue. He did it to attract the most productive workers he could. Without unions, employers will have the same incentive.
