A very good point but you have to understand who is negotiating on behalf of the company and what his motivations may be. Big corporations become just as bureaucratic and big government. The CEO who is doing the negotiating today may be faced with a choice between a strike ... which will affect his paycheck today, or an increase in wages ... which will affect his paycheck today, or an increase in union benefits ... which will affect the paycheck of his successor. General Motors kicked this can of un-funded liabilities down the road so far that they were no longer a take-over target for anyone but the government and the union.
