For the observant there was value and significance in the location itself. For the non-observant, it was just a place on the map.
Not that odd really. I don't particularly care that Silesia, where my Prussian ancestors originated, is gone and now part of Poland. I don't know if I would support the re-establishment of Silesia and Prussia if someone where to try to start a revolution, because like the Jews I knew in grad school, I'm an American and don't self identify with any other location.
