I never smoked pot. I don't even smoke tobacco. As a youth, I underwent an FBI special background investigation to obtain my security clearance and access, so I have a cleaner substance abuse record than the last three CinCs. What we really need to ask is what has been the return on investment from criminalizing marijuana. Laws obviously don't deter recreational users. Major employers deter use by drug testing and terminating employees who indulge in intoxicating substances, so there is little risk of FedEx drivers, refinery workers or airline pilots being stoned on the job. The prohibitions are simply ineffective, costly and allow the government to reduce our liberty as a side effect.
