There is an economic parallel to Hostess playing out in Europe and the US. As politicians made promises and changed our federal model into a central power, no one considered the long-term viability of such a scheme. Apparently no one bothered studying what happened to the Soviet Union, even more statist than the US, but basically the same mindset. The money has run out, and no amount of taxation can pay our debt.
Long-term survival of the country appears to be returning power back to the state and local governments, including all social programs. Otherwise, the union will break apart, like the USSR did 20 years ago.
