The cult of Federal supremacy--and that is what it is, a cult--has both Jacobin and totalitarian overtones. According to Roussea, freedom consisted in submission to the "general will" and those who did not care to submit needed to be "forced to be free." And, as we remember from 1984 (the novel), slavery is freedom. If American Christians are ever thrown to be lions, the likes of our columnist will still be telling them that their only morally acceptable recourse is to wait until the next elections. In the meantime, they should salt and pepper themselves to be tastier for the lions.
