The intent of the American Revolution was not to damage the British Empire, but to remove the American colonies from British rule. A fine distinction, but a real one. The Founders knew that their secession could not be peaceful, because they knew their king. They knew in advance that their actions would be regarded as revolt, so they went ahead and called it a revolution.
Peaceful secession should be a possibility in the American federation, but knowing our king, it will either be brought about by violent revolt, or not at all. The Confederate states hoped their secession could be peaceful. They probably should have known better. Their king was no more amused by their pretensions to self-rule than George was.
