I don't think these numbers are right—or at least the way Katie's reporting them are wrong. The numbers jumped 78,000 TO 439,000 . . . they didn't jump FROM 73,000 to 439,000. In other words, the increase was 78,000—not 361,000. (Of course, I could be missing something there.)
And that's certainly not to say it's a good thing, regardless. The big problem here is that Sandy's effect is essentially masking the other factor involved here. The Obama administration will point to the storm as the reason for the increase, and will ignore the DOZENS of corporations that have already started laying people off because of Obama's reelection. Ultimately, thought, that effect will wear off—and they'll be out of excuses.
