I guess both Gato and Harrison disagree with Mr Chapman. Tradition, even when it no longer makes sense, is difficult to overcome. Regarding Harrison's comment, under a popular vote maybe the Dem would win Cal and NY by, say, 60-40. This could easily be made up by a good Republican candidate in other states. Under a popular vote, candidates would have to campaign all over the country, not just in the few remaining 'battleground' states.
