The success of our nation has always been the ability to find a balance in allocating scarce resources. There was an implicit realization that the people who produced the revenue that the federal government used to "provide for the common defense (and) promote the general welfare" would continue to do so only as long as the demands on what was rightfully theirs did not become excessive.
It now appears that the symbiotic relationship is in grave danger. The demands have become excessive and the producers are able to exercise options that will starve the government which has become too short sighted to see the line they stepped over.
There's a price to be paid for being dumber than dirt and it's not just the dumb who will pay it.
