First off, your prof. is wrong. What happens is desensitization. As deviant behavior comes to light, it invariable is discovered that it is more prevalent than earlier thought because as it becomes OK to talk about, more are encouraged to reveal. As the behavior becomes more discussed, people tend to find more comfortable, less disturbing language for it. In this way the stigma against the behavior decreases until some can justify the behavior as being acceptable.
