Scientists didn't posit a hollow earth. That was science fiction. Jules Verne. It became apparent very quickly that the moon had no atmosphere, and it was apparent since prehistoric times that it had no blue oceans nor green forests.
As to Dark Energy, that's speculative science. What we do know is that on the large scale, the galaxies are spreading out from each other at an accelerating pace. Science must at least try to fit its theories to reality. Any theory which says the spread should be decelerating---is wrong. That leaves out "good old physics like we learned in the 1950's".
