The author doesn't go far enough in explaining the reasons for the Electoral College and many of these posts don't fully flesh it out, either. As originally designed, the House of Representatives represented the People's interests directly by population, and the Senate represented the State's interests (which are sometimes different), with each State having equal representation. (The 17th Amendment changed all that by, in effect, having the Senate represent the People too, thereby leaving the State with no direct representation in the federal government.)
