When people suggest that the government should get out of the marriage business, it seems to me that they are really trying to peddle the idea that the government should rubber-stamp any "relationship" which the parties want to call a marriage. Of course, if it did that, while leaving on the books all the other legislation that references marriage, any individual would be subject to civil or even criminal penalties for discriminating against, or perhaps just hurting the feelings of, any two (or more) persons who called themselves husband and wife. In short, the entire argument about getting the government out of the marriage business is either ill-considered or intentionally deceptive.
