Circa 1948, in order to solve certain problems in 'education' Tennessee imposed limited scope 2% sales tax. Today, the 'total' sales tax which has been 'expanded' to allow 'local' sales taxation on virtually every item sold has become as much as 9.75% -- and the problems that 'sales tax' was supposed to 'resolve' 60 odd years ago are as bad or worse. I cite this because the REAL problem is not how much government collects, but how unwisely the money is spent -- which is largely only to buy votes, not solve other problems.
