Many news outlets acted like the President's "Horses and Bayonets" schlock was a clever response. It was inane and classless. Romney said "Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285." The main point couldn't be clearer. According to the Navy, we have too few ships. Did the President claim Romney's numbers were wrong? Did he say the numbers were right, but they were a short term anomaly, being addressed through acquisition? Did he say the Joint Chiefs had revised their thinking, and were now good with 285? No, No, and No. Like the class clown, he tried to make a funny, hoping to cover the fact that he had no answer to the question put to him.
