America has had a very long-term problem with foreign policy. The reason is that nobody has ever defined the purpose of foreign policy. No goal to be reached has ever been clearly enunciated. Therefore the discussion generally deteriorates to a meaningless argument over what tactics may or may not be employed, with one side concerning itself with pragmatic, if momentary, considerations and the other side claiming the kind of moral superiority that cannot exist save in their own imaginations. So to give everybody the kind of brilliant illumination they so desperately need, I now proceed to dazzle the readership-------or at least those that actually bother to read and evaluate what I have to say.
