The big problem with compromise in government is it takes away the argument of whether or not to spend and instead converts to a discussion where the spending always occurs and the compromise is only over how much. As far as history? Really? Civil War? Go re read some of your sources, both on the causes of the civil war, and on deep periods of political acrimony in the US. You will find far deeper political discord in the 60's and 70's (Nixon was re-elected for a reason. Americans rejected the anarchy of the left not unlike the occupy ers. ) the mid 30's were also deeply divisive. We tend to forget the early years of Roosevelt, beyond the bs regarding the new deal that has been dumped on us. Go read some actual period newspapers
