If we lived in some magical land where a totally free and open society could self regulate, you'd be right. But that's not the case. There is nothing wrong with government, as long as its limited. We need government, a limited one, to do certain things for us. One of those things is to provide for the security of the citizenry. Airlines are highly regulated; their pilots, aircraft, and operations, are all heavily regulated by the government yet no one thinks we should allow the airlines to self regulate on those matters. An airplane in flight is a potentially dangerous thing, thousands of them in flight at once, adds to the risk of something going catastrophically wrong.
