The key point is that French citizens have been "left in such economic ignorance for years." A quick perusal of the comment sections at Politico or the Washington Post demonstrates that the same thing has happened in the U.S.: a huge fraction of the voters have no idea how a free economy works. In fact they consider anything not run by government to be some sort of criminal enterprise.
And so, just like in France, voters here will see to it that the country goes bankrupt and we end up with riots in the streets just like Greece has. Too many people just don't get it that resources are not infinite, and that they can't just keep voting themselves ever-greater benefits, forever. Even if Obama loses this election, bankruptcy is inevitable.
