Increasing debt and "The Welfare State" as it was called when I was in high school, was identified by my American Government instructor as the means that would likely destroy this nation because it was neither productive nor sustainable. And, it was indicated that the governmenance (not just politicians) was being corrupted because 'something for nothing' was corrupting the voters and what they expected of 'government'. That 'teaching' was over 60 years ago, so this is not a new idea, only expanded by the most liberal political machinery in history. Bribing voters with 'treasury funds' is nothing new. "When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." Ben Franklin
