Louie13: Another piece of the solution which you imply but do not detail is that we need to sanction intermediate tiers of health-care professionals as primary-care providers, not prosecute and/or persecute them for "practicing medicine without a license." I'm not talking about "alternative medicine" practitioners and other lunatics, but rather about well-educated nurse-midwives, physician assistants, EMTs and military-trained trauma medics, etc. It doesn't require an M.D. to sew up that nasty gash your kid got showing off on his skateboard, or to supervise a normal, low-risk birth. Doctors and hospitals and their associated high costs are appropriate for serious illnesses and injuries, but they shouldn't be our only legal option.
