Numbers do not tell a universal story. In our rural Missouri district, the average expenditure per pupil, based on average daily attendance, is less than $9,100. Our graduation rate is consistently above 90%. The overwhelming number of students that we ultimately count as dropouts are not those students who have been with us over time, but instead come to us following serial residency in multiple school districts and dysfunctional family circumstances. We accept and teach those students often knowing that we may be the only support they have. There are no singular solutions. Meaningful discussion must acknowledge that educational success is the product of everything that walks through the front door.
