Social Security and Medicare are real taxes but they are payroll taxes, not income taxes. There is a huge difference between the two. Payment of income taxes can be avoided or it can be recovered upon filing. It can also be recovered up filing with additional payments added for such things like the Additional Child Tax Credit. You can actually get back more than you paid. You cannot avoid or recover a payroll tax. Their claim is correct.
