Consider the moral issues that are simultaneously political platforms: homosexuality and abortion are two big ones that should immediately come to mind. If it can be said that these are political issues, how is a pastor supposed to preach about them without violating the 501(C)(3) status? If a pastor is unwilling to speak on these issues do to threats from the IRS, chances are that his congregation will take that silence as a show of moral ambiguity / apathy. Apparently the IRS is afraid to prosecute - the moment they do, they give these pastors their day in court.
