The most unreported remark of the debate is where Mr. Romney calls our deficits and debt "immoral" and says that each government program must meet the test of whether that program is so vital to this nation that we must borrow to fund it. The clarity of this approach is stunning- this is the only adult way to budget our collective national money. While plenty of programs are "nice" or useful or help somebody or other, are they VITAL enough to our American family that we must borrow (from China and from subsequent generations) to pay for them? Big Bird and PBS is just one of the programs that fail that test- not to say that they are worth while, just not worthy of obligating our grandchildren to pay for them.
