I think it's also worth noting that much of the hellish imagery that most Christians seem to identify with comes from Dante's Inferno, which was not part of the bible. The hell or areas of the dead in the bible are very diverse from the OT to the NT. That indicates that the concept was not well-defined or understood by the people of the time. That doesn't mean they weren't correct on some levels. It merely means they didn't understand or didn't articulate it very well in their holy texts.
