Actually, the reason this debate mattered is that it gave Romney a platform to dispute the lies that the Obama camp has been spewing through the left slanted media. People who had never heard adequate answers to the lies got a chance last night. Also, it was obvious that being confronted by an actual opponent instead of a crowd of adoring fans and a "journalist" who has thrills up his leg made Obama nervous, scared, uncertain, and actually seem small and insignificant.
