No! His example is very realistic. As a writer, he might have a day job or receive royalties from previous published work, but his example (I'm sure) happens all the time. Ayn Rand, reportedly, took 10 years to write Atlas Shrugged. She was able to do that because her previous book continued to earn enough royalties for her not to worry about food to eat. He absolutely is not making up the plight of a writer here.
