I usually like John Ransom's pieces, but I think he paints with an overly broad brush here. I was born in 1947. I'm Asian American. Like many other Americans, we believed, and still believe, in the American Dream. Many of us answered the call to serve during the Vietnam war. I served in the Marine Corps (did not go to Vietnam), mainly because of the draft. Believe me, I was not fond of the Marine Corps. It was not a particularly fun experience in my life. I'm the independent sort. I did not want an institution (the Corps) telling me what I couldn't and could do 24/7. Many fellow Marines re-enlisted because they were afraid to go out into the real world. Still, I'm so damned proud to have served. Others served and lost their lives or limbs.
