I became of age in the 50's. No welfare, no food stamps, no medicare or medicaid but one heck of a lot of freedom. I quit school in the 10th grade to join the military and I had already received a better education than someone now getting a BA.
I now have grown children who think what America as it is today is free because they have never lived with true freedom. Freedom from government intrusion in healthcare, education, energy, manufacturing and least of all your private personal lives. That is why it is so hard to bring the younger people into the struggle. While us that lived free know what the fight is about, to them it is an abstract concept they never experienced.
