Yes, as a matter of fact it would have been a real brain teaser to say: "OK, go ahead." Why? Jimmy Carter did that and it ruined his presidency. If you think past the high school-ish presumption that 'anybody would have said yes,' you get to the probably that your entire future career hinges on this having been the right thing to tell others to go ahead and do. He had to take that chance, but I guess if you see anybody in his position OK-ing an important decision like that with little more than a 'yeah, let's do that, it's what's expected' then I guess that tells us how deeply you would think about making that decision were you in his shoes, doesn't it?
