Sounds like you are teaching about 50 years too late. Back then you could and would fail a student if the grades warranted it. You could make students stay after school if necessary for extra help. You could insist on the completion of homework (or fail the student). You could send unruly kids to the principal (as one who knows), or more than likely you would handle the discipline yourself during or after class. Your hands were far from tied. Teachers didn't make too much then, but they were among the most respected members of the community...and well deserving that respect. Then came the late 60's along with pony-tailed professors who found the left quite attractive. Been downhill ever since, and we are picking up speed.
