I think Ms Marsden is correct as far as her discussion goes. But what should we do other than keep doing what we were doing? First of course, improve (or listen) to our intelligence on the ground. Second we have to react. It is clear that using local populace for security purposes cannot work. They may take our money, but some them are probably radical Islamists who will betray us in a fight. So we need good intelligence and positioned fast response teams (of well armed soldiers/marines/seals) who can respond quickly when there are indications of a threat. Had we done that in Libya and Eqypt and used deadly force when surrounded by the supposed rioters, we may have lost some popularity but would have gained respect.
