National defense is one of the fairly few things the federal government is actually supposed to do. I don't have any crystal ball to tell me what the ideal proportion of GDP or of the federal budget would be for the US or any other country, but defense spending as a proportion of GDP and as a proportion of the federal budget has been trending steadily down over time, while the costs of entitlements and social spending nowhere found in the enumerated powers have been steadily increasing as a proportion of both measures. It would seem to me to be a no-brainer to decide where the axe should fall.
