Those on the Right are often heard saying this sort of thing. We should be more careful. To me, this is Wilsonian-Rooseveltian aggrandizing of the office of the President.
The president is should never, by us, be viewed as some Great Leader Dei Gratia (as T. Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, and LBJ, and doubtless, BHO wish to be), but as the representative of the people. Head of an administration, yes, and leading /it/ -- but /representing/ the people (=nation) rather than /leading/ the people.
As a related point, the American penchant to conflate /nation/, i.e. a people, with /country/, i.e. a political entity is problematic. Dictators lead nations (and countries). An
