A key problem about teacher compensation-- While the average teacher nationally makes > $54k in base alone per the NEA itself, this is skewed toward tenure/longevity, so starting pay scales can be underwhelming. Hence, many capable people choose other fields instead, leaving teaching to often less able union-protected, overpaid cling-ons. A second problem-- so-called Education degrees from "Teachers Colleges." These are too often jokes academically. You do NOT get what you think that you paid for.
