I am a caseworker in the welfare system; I have weekly contact with poor women. The welfare system has taken over the role of husband as breadwinner (aside from the women who are living with their children's fathers and lying about it) for these women, and the situation is not pretty. Even those women who are trying to earn a living for themselves and their children have a very rough time of it. There are a limited number of childcare spaces, so even if they can find a job, they sometimes can't get the children cared for in their absence. They are working at low-pay jobs and possibly trying to get additional education to increase their earning ability. None of this is good for children, especially the youngest ones.
