Good thoughts. I'm a 1939 model. When I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, some new teachers arrived, in a single year, who were all male, all veteran's and all no nonsense. We were taught to read beyond our level, including maps among other things; how to calculate angles and trajectories (geometry), and how to throw our puny pocket knives into a tree trunk and make them stick. These guys loved us and taught us how to live with each other. Arguments that resulted in fist fights were settled with boxing gloves under their supervision so no one got really hurt. The school of hard knocks was open and all was peace and tranquility. No one wanted to disappoint his teacher. The school admin. folks, and our parents, were all cut from the same cloth.
