I ran into a similar situation some years back: two engineers from Ukraine in their early 40's, a married couple without children, couldn't get into the U.S. -- while we're urged to give amnesty to uneducated illegals.
This falls into place when we think of the Democratic Party as promoting an immigration policy for the benefit of the Democratic Party, not the country. Educated, middle-class immigrants, you see, might vote Republican; poor, illiterate immigrants are sure Democratic machine voters who will vote as they're told.
I'm old enough to remember when the Democrats were "anti-immigrant", outraged by Pres. Ford's admission of Vietnamese refugees in 1975 and 1976. Because they might vote Republican down the road.
