Oddly enough, academics does not mirror athletics-and perhaps it should. In the athletic arena, coaches tend to demand more-and dish out punishment accordingly, regardless of race. The athlete-be it football, basketball, field hockey-doesn't matter-doesn't expect preferential treatment, and would be outcast among teammates if he/she received it. What invariably happens is that the vast majority learn from their mistakes and give the coaching staff the effort they demand. You want to be a starter? Here's what you have to do. Sounds simple, but have you ever heard of similar demands of effort/performance int the classroom? Never.
