It is obvious that government spending needs to be cut, and cut drastically. Now for the idea of a consumtion (or Fair, or Sales, or VAT). Legislators may propose a "temporary" consumption tax to ease us out of the economic doldrums. Calling it temporary would make such a tax easier to put into law, but when was the last time we saw a tax actually repealed? That is a rare event, and even when they are "repealed" they are actually just renamed. Consuption taxes are not fair. People purchase less and less, and it would certainly not help the economy now when people are cash strapped. Government has a bitter pill to swallow, and they do not want to take that pill (i.e. cutting spending).
