Coulter completely misses the point why McCarthy was villified. It wasn't the 205 / 57 discrepancy. It was the two things: 1. He was obviously a paranoid lunatic; and 2. His profiling and slandering of anyone with opposite political leanings. First and foremost, the idea that there were even 57 Russian spies in State Department was ludicrous on its face. One lesson of McCarthyism is that you don't accuse people of being a spy without solid proof. Another is the realization that there can be "communists" Americans. That is, Americans who may agree in a general sense that a communist system of government has some benefits, yet who are completely loyal to the U.S. This remains a foreign concept to people like Coulter.
