Why is the military budget so big? Three reasons besides the cost of real protection
1. Bureaucracy - every large organization of human beings will ultimately behave like a bureacracy and seek to grow itself for no other reason. This is as true of the Pentagon as anything else. And like every bureaucracy, I have no doubt it could be chopped way back with no discernable difference.
2. Congressional Pork - most people in congress look on the military as benefits for their district. This might be in the form of bases or perhaps defense contracts to local businesses. It's the ultimate "run by committee" enterprise.
