Ms. Liebau is right: Britain's NHS stinks in its delivery of all but the most trivial services; that's why the Britain's affluent almost universally opt for private-sector medical care (which is allowed to exist there). But, NHS care is "free," and free services are addictive, as anyone who has ever started to put out old bread for a raccoon knows. What's more, the NHS addiction is abetted by the "narrative" constantly fed to the public by the British news and entertainment media, which depicts pre-NHS medical care in Dickensian terms, and not-so-subtly suggests that returning to a private-sector model of medical delivery would be tantamount to sticking children in _Oliver Twist_'s orphanage.
