I think we need to remember that the right to keep and bear arms did not originate with the Second Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms was a part of the English Bill of Rights of 1689. It was reported by Sir William Blackstone in his monumental "Commentary on the Laws of England"(1765), Book One, Chapter One.
This was the most important law book used in Colonial America and continues to shape our law today. The colonists had a right to keep and bear arms and did so.
