I think we need to remember that the right to keep and bear arms did not originate with the Second Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms was a part of the English Bill of Rights of 1689. It was reported by Sir William Blackstone in his monumental "Commentary on the Laws of England"(1765), Book One, Chapter One. http://www.lonang.com/exlibris/blackstone/bla-101.htm This was the most important law book used in Colonial America and continues to shape our law today. The colonists had a right to keep and bear arms and did so.
