While Mr. Buchanan makes a number of very good points he never really addresses the fact that protectionism which is what he advocates also puts the government in charge of choosing which corporations should get preferential treatment and which leads to increase prices from non-competition. We already see this where the government does protect industries, see for example sugar production. The same was true when the US was protecting the steel and the auto industries. It would be helpful to hear from Mr. Buchanan as to how he would address these problems. They are similar to the corporatism problems he notes except writ only on the American stage.
