I learned a lot about "poor people" many years ago. Many of them want to stay poor... or keep doing things to stay locked in poverty. To earn money for college, I worked on a farm one summer for 10 weeks, baling hay. The farmer tried to hire poor people to help them get off of welfare and food stamps. (I was the only middle-class guy.) I worked with 9 different helpers in 10 weeks because they all kept quitting. No one lasted longer than two weeks. They'd whine and complain about the "stupid job," quit, and then go back to food stamps. At the end of the summer, I was the only worker left, and the farmer told me he would never again try to hire "the poor" because they're addicted to gov't freebies. (I've posted this story before.)
