Well written! It is nice to see that this article mentions the Napoleonic Wars, because the War of 1812 was largely a side-theater to the much bigger ongoing war in Europe. Our fledgling republic had the great challenge of trying to maneuver between two clashing major powers. We ended up fighting the British because the Royal Navy had largely eliminated any French ambitions in North America (Louisiana Purchase factors in here). Had French naval power been greater we might have fought them instead (as we nearly did in the late 1790s). And, it is not cooincidental that the US and the British managed to hammer out a peace settlement just after Napoleons' (apparent) defeat in 1814. Carl S., Historian and USN Veteran
