Actually, most sabermatecians agree that Rickey was indeed the best lead-off hitter in baseball history. Best hitter or player not even close, but in the end the name of the game is scoring more runs than the other team, and Rickey ends up number 1 with 2,295. His WAR (Wins Above Replacement value) an advanced metric, puts him 19th all time, and 14th among position players. Bit of a hot-head in his younger days, but mellowed out over time and became a fan favorite toward the end.
